I’ve always been a fan of the social engineering tactics like this.

Buy an obscure extension for a competitor (.co’s are usually available) and build a quick site. Go to the sites that link to your competitor and tell them you’re “rebranding” and want your link to the new .co page.

Redirect or link out to your own site as you wish…

Create a fake review site of one of your competitors. Write riveting reviews and make them seem awesome. Then, make sure they don’t know it’s you, ask for them to link to the review site from their homepage to increase sales.

Then once that’s up for a week or so, 301 it to your site :).

another way to have great links from strong sites like universities: even if you are 40 years old, become a student – again – and start working in the IT department, adding a link to your site. downside: you have to make exams anyway or you probably are not going to be chosen as working student.
