SEO Exeter – A Fun Challenge
Is it possible to rank for a term like “SEO Exeter” without having one link going to the page?*
I suppose this challenge is going to mean that I will require good on page optimisation? O.k so what other places are similar to Exeter? Well according to Google there are 5 related places these being Nottingham, Bristol, Norwich, Coventry and Cardiff. I have to admit that Coventry and Norwich do surprise me, I suppose that Google isn’t entirely genius after all…
So what is Exeter about? What does Exeter have to hold for the average schmuck like me? This is where it gets interesting (ish) According to normal Google related search Exeter is linked to Bristol, Devon, Bath, Southampton, Exmouth, Taunton, Plymouth, Newquay, Cardiff, and Bournemouth. Now this is a bit more like it, southern based towns and cities with cardiff also being reasonably close. In terms of exeter related searches it offers exeter city, exeter business, exeter official, exeter university and exeter information this is quite straight and well a bit dull (just like this post I suppose, in fact are you still reading? If so pat on the back for you**)
Don’t worry we will be over soon, the last thing to catch my eye was that the related searches for Google images was different to that of the normal Google search. What did the related searches offer up for images? I hear you say well, since you asked… it appears that exeter university, exeter quay, exeter cathedral, exeter devon, exeter town and exeter shopping are rather popular. Well now you know.

Update 1 (12/08/2011) – So the page has indexed fairly quickly and it is ranking a not to disappointing 32nd in Google.co.uk – Have just made a few tweaks that you should notice in red
Update 2 (05/10/2011) – Forgotten about this page so thought I’d add a few bits and pieces. Currently ranking 30th so have stayed pretty stable, think I might add some related content to the links above… I’ve also just realised the links above haven’t been linking out properly!!

This page seems to be shifting up the SEO rankings for your desired Exeter based search phrase, now showing at #13 in the SERPS for me when I do a quick search in Google.

Hey, I had the same idea and did a similar posting on how to rank for SEO RI, check it out for some ideas. I also included a PDF as a case study, of itself, in the hopes that it can occupy one more slot in the SERPs.
They’re popping up and around 1st page, am waiting to see where they settle.

Hello. I live just underneath the hills on the left hand side of this picture of Exeter. Saw you in the middle of page one rankings for SEO Exeter and thought “who would buy a domain name like that!?” Ran it through a translator. Lightbulbs all round. Very glad I stumbled across this blog. One comment (if I may?) Though this page may not be directly in-linked by anybody, it’s still getting the accrued value of all the other inlinks going into the rest of your site (which I assume to be considerable). So technically, it is still affected by inlinks, impossible not to be. Even so, dig the idea of no direct inlinks experiment ranking for SEO Exeter and I’m impressed. And I dig the Thesis theme too. I own two of the results on that page, though not much time is spent on it these days, a lad at work pointed this out to me and it was a decent read.
Was your strategy purely to stick up a page full of laterally related keywords and terms based on googles take on the area perhaps? maybe a bit of internal linkg from this domain? I would look myself, but im v.busy and I’m currently running a an experement at the moment in domain shinanegans.

To be honest it was just a stupid little thing that I was testing and as people have pointed out the stronger the site gets the more likely the page is going to rank for it’s term… The ‘plan’ was to review related terms, emphasis a few terms and link out to the top 10 results at the time (I think that this may have changed…)
Well thanks for the interesting article and take on SEO. I realized this page could actually be a pretty clever way to get yourself a bunch of links (or at least build relationships) from Locals if washed and repeated properly, getting the locals from various areas.
The irony is I’m too busy now to take advantage of any of the work that comes through my personal site, even though I rank up there.
