So it appears that SEO’s have decided that with Penguin 2.0 looming large it’s a good idea to cover the bases by stating that anything and everything to do with link building could lead to a penalisation of some sort. Great!

Where does this leave the paralysed masses? The frozen, battered and fearful, afraid of creating a link for their client just in case this one breaks the camels back? Even the holiest of holy is being questioned - Guest posts? Dear God they’re not getting fucked too?!

I guess you better stop doing the only thing that SEO’s have felt comfortable doing for the last year or so… Or just keep links in content and refuse to use an author bio Personally I think that I will be spending less time guest posting but that’s not because I think it’s a bad tactic I just think there are better things to be doing with my time.

However.

There will be a lot of your out there who will persist with this dying art and understandably so. Problem is you’ve probably run a bit dry when it comes to the old contact list. There is only a certain amount of email/persona’s you want to create to contact your list of sites. Your clients industry is dead with only a few drops of link juice left, right?

Left! I mean, wrong!

But Sean I’ve gone down to the 87th page for “guest post” “inclusive holidays”! There really isn’t anywhere left to contact.

Well then you better look for other keywords and sites that Google would see as semantically relevant eh?

The wonderwheel and Google sets were once upon a time useful tools to find out semantically similar terms and although these tools are no longer ‘visible’ the ghost of Google sets is still hovering around in the dank & dark Google docs. You can read more about it here, right click and open in a new tab you bastards!

If you’re too lazy to check out that link basically this is what you have to do.

1 – Choose and write down 2 terms in a Google spreadsheet

2 – Highlight terms, press CTRL and drag down at the bottom right corner. I usually drag it down to the 100th cell because it’s the default. If you want more results see how far down you can go.

3 – Laugh at all the similar relevant terms that you can either use to produce new content or use to find new link building opportunities with some handy advanced search operators.

Now depending on your keyword you could/should have 98 related terms. Imagine combining your new keywords with something like > (“guest post” OR “this guest post” OR “in this guest post” OR “article written by guest” OR “post written by guest” OR “written by guest” OR “become a guest contributor” OR “by guest contributor”) shit you might have some new websites to spam/contact after all!

Oh and if you want to know how you can scrape the top 100 results then read this & you’ll be able to do it within 5 minutes. Combine your new related search terms (98) with the search operator above whilst scraping the top 100 results should give you (difficult maths) 9,800 results.

Yes some of these will be duplicates, yes it will be a ballache exporting all the data and extracting all the duplicates

but you haven’t got anything else to do have you?

Monitoring Rankings For Large SEO Brands

I’ve been toying around with the idea of monitoring keyword behaviour for the largest SEO brands.

This isn’t for a malicious reason but merely out of interest.

I’m interested in finding out how the bigger boys are doing? What do they rank for? What do they want to rank for?

Oh and also to see whether any of them get penalised…

To be honest I’m surprised that no-one thought of it earlier a bit like a team of the week, seeding or class rankings (maybe they did and thought it was a shit idea – ed)

Well when I saying toying around with, I’ve been tracking keyword rankings in Google.com for the following brands:

Are there any other brands or news sites worth checking? Is there a cool experiment that could be made from this?

I would like to do a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly post discussing who has been successful/not as successful.

So, You Wanna Be A Brand Huh?

BRAND SIGNALS!!

They’re everywhere!

It appears that the SEO world in 2013 is about creating a brand (fake it til you make it), standing out within your industry (creating original, interesting, link worthy content) and user metrics (CTR, time on site, returning visitors. You know, all that good stuff)

Oh yeah, maybe also a bit of social goodness as well.

Today we are going to discuss BRANDS and what makes them so brandy. All of our clients want to be large brands and lets face it the majority of them will never be but how could we look to make them look a little shinier in the eye of our friendly, local Googlebot?

I was sat in bed thinking “If one was interested how could one fake the backlink profile to make them look more brandy?”

and then it hit me. “Who are the biggest brands?” so I looked it up.

Cool, no real surprises there. “I wonder who links to them? More importantly who links to all of them?”

So I looked…

Yes there are .com’s/.co.uk’s but I have stuck with the .com’s just for this example. You can use either the fresh index or historical index but for this example I’ve used the fresh index.

Interestingly (or not) there are only 62 websites online linking to all 10 of these brands. I know that Majestic don’t index the whole of the internet but this still surprises me. Lets have a look at a few of them below.

How about some more?

I like this idea as it allows you to create/gain links from certain websites that either:

Will pass on ‘You’re a trusted brand, we like you!’ metrics
Are unlikely to result in your website getting any sort of penalisation. Unless Google decides to dilute links if they aren’t pointing at large brands. I think it’s safe to say that this is fantasy, for the moment at least.

Exported your own report and got links from the 1,000 sites? You’re on the way to faking a brand, excellent!

Find Places To Add Banner Ads/Links

Small idea. Might work for you, might not. Probably more likely to might work than might not.

Add competitor(s) site into OSE / Your link God of choice.
Filter results for most possible links (external, to all pages on the root domain)
Run report, wait. Perhaps do a sudoku? Or maybe read this? Regardez un lien naturel!
Export report and put it in order of anchor text. Scroll down to ‘img alt’
You now have a list of sites that could accept image based links for your brand. Some of these sites will no doubt be owned by your competitors so do your research or at least think about this when you are doing your outreach!
If the first competitor doesn’t work for you then maybe try the top 10 results in OSE? I have just ran a report for a top site in the ‘holidays’ search market and have hundreds of websites to target/manipulate/fuck. It could well be that they aren’t interested in you adding image ads but maybe they’re more ‘down to GP’ than other sites would? Only one way to find out I suppose…
Yes, this is likely to cost money, hence the ‘Buy Links’ area of the title.

O.k, Sean I kinda like the idea but I’m not totally sold.

Why would I really want to do this?

Well, it’s a visual world and aren’t SEO’s forever talking about gaining links that also get click throughs? Remember da Googz is always watching.

Here’s another reason why you should look into putting links in images… > Yes it’s an experiment and yes it’s probably not flawless but it’s something worth testing for yourself non? If you don’t read the DejanSEO blog I recommend you do, add it to your Google Reader list or somethink. lol.

Playing around with maps. A content master’s day is always busy.

I thought I’d make a map showing the football clubs in London. The key is pretty self explanatory and when you hover over the pins you get club information (address, phone number and league) as well as the website if you click on the team name.

Wow Sean, amazing!

I suppose with a bit of time and effort there are loads of things that you could create, how about:

A map of free resources within a city?
A pub crawl for you and your mates?
A list of comic book stores within a local area?
A map of respectable SEO agencies in England? (lol, at an empty map)
Your favourite restaurants in the UK?

O.k so the food over here is pretty shit but I’m sure that there are millions more ideas that you could think of.
